You create an eScript inside your PiMS, with the patient and medication details pre-filled. How the script is filled, paid for, and delivered depends on the type of medication you prescribe and the pharmacy that dispenses it.
Two ways to send an eScript
Send it to a VetScript-authorised pharmacy you choose, or
Send an eScript token to the animal owner, who can then choose where to fill it.
What you're prescribing shapes the workflow
The medication usually determines the type of pharmacy that fills it, which in turn shapes how payment and fulfilment work:
Veterinary-only medication is typically sent to an online pharmacy.
Compounded medication is sent to a compounding pharmacy.
Registered human medication for off-label animal use is typically sent to a retail (brick-and-mortar) chemist.
Payment and fulfilment
Veterinary-only medication (online pharmacy): the pharmacy usually deals with the animal owner directly for payment and delivery, so your practice only needs to charge a script fee.
Compounded medication (compounding pharmacy): your practice can charge the animal owner for both the script fee and the medication, or the script fee only. If you charge for the medication, it is typically sent back to your practice for the animal owner to collect.
Registered human medication for off-label use (brick-and-mortar chemist): your practice charges a script fee, and the animal owner pays for and collects the medication in person.
You bill the script fee, and the medication where applicable, through your PiMS. Every eScript is recorded back in the patient file for a complete, traceable history.
